How much does a business video cost? An honest breakdown

"How much does a video cost?" is the hardest question in our industry, because the honest answer is that you are not buying a video. You are buying days, people and thinking. Here is how that maths actually works.

The four things you are paying for

  • Pre-production. Messaging, question sets, shot planning, scheduling and logistics.
  • Crew days. Director, camera, sound and lighting. Most costs scale with days, not minutes of footage.
  • Post-production. Edit, colour, sound mix, subtitles, graphics and revisions.
  • Versions. Every extra format, aspect ratio or language adds edit time.

Where budgets get wasted

Two-location shoots that could have been one. Scripts that are rewritten after filming. Five-minute films that nobody watches past the first minute. Extra kit that improves the picture by five percent and the persuasion by zero.

Where budget is well spent

Good sound. A director who can get a natural answer out of a nervous expert. Subtitles. And enough planning that one filming day yields a hero film plus a dozen social cuts rather than a single asset.

A simple way to budget

Decide the number of filming days first, then decide how many finished assets you need from each day. That gives you a realistic quote conversation instead of an abstract one. For most expert firms, one well-used day per quarter is the sweet spot.
